Trading Cards

Well, after nearly four months of shooting, I'm almost done the trading cards for the Toronto Police Mounted Unit, 2011 series. It's a labour of love- I donate my time for this project because I think it's important to foster police-community relations. In this case, so many children are collecting the cards whenever they see a police officer on a horse, it's great. They're reading about the officers and horses on the backs of the cards and learning little details about them all. It's a lot of fun working with the unit and they're always warm and accommodating. Over the past seven years of shooting them I've amassed a huge archive of images, everything from horses getting their teeth done to escorting the Queen's landau at the Queen's Plate. I've loved every minute of it.

Being a Toronto photographer in a sea of other photographers, I'm not gonna lie, it's nice to have that "Anne de Haas Photography" on the back of each of the thousands of cards, tiny marketing aids, but it's the little moments and memories with the unit that keep me doing this project year after year. Thanks to them all for trusting me and letting me into their day to day lives, it's been wonderful.

Our new baby. He fell out of his nest last week and while I had made up my mind not to interfere with nature, it was hard to watch him baking in the hot sun and getting dehydrated. David brought him into the house and we fed him all rainy weekend and now he's getting so strong and perky it's great. We put him outside all day under the tree in a terrarium with the lid off so his mum can still come and feed him, but all she does is sit there and scold me. We'll see what happens.

I read online to feed him dog kibble soaked in water. Or tinned dog food. I didn't have any tinned stuff so he seems to like the kibble. He eats every two hours or every time I walk past. and he hears my voice. I think I'm in love.

This is one of those moments that stick in your mind. I guess, being a photographer, some of my moments are preserved. My mom had asked me to bring some of my portfolio to the nursing home to show my dad. He was a professional photographer when I was growing up and is the reason I do what I do today. The Alzheimer disease had already sucked all the life out of him, along with any memories. He didn't know who any of us were. I felt stupid giving him the photos to look at. He studied this one for a while and then closed his eyes. I don't know what I was trying to do anyway, since he couldn't speak, and I don't know where this story is going.. I just stumbled across the photo while cleaning up.

Are you asking yourself, "How can she take this photo?" I guess that's a good question.

First of all, I needed to take it. Secondly, sometimes it's so much easier for me to deal with something if I'm looking through my lens.

My mother never expected to be sitting watching her son die, but she is, at the age of 82, doing just that. They've reconciled a lifetime of separation in just a few days and this image breaks my heart for that reason.

The riot at Christie pits shows a darker side of Toronto history, a side which is often left forgotten. Thousands of dollars have been put towards signs, art, and plaques that stop us from forgetting Garrison Creek, a creek that was buried underground, and now flows underneath Christie Pits. There is not even a single plaque that brings to light that the Christie Pits riot took place.

P.C. Jill Finley and police mount Sabre. The R. C. Harris Water Treatment Plant in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, is both a crucial piece of infrastructure and an architecturally acclaimed historic building. It is located in the east of the city along the shore of Lake Ontario.

The plant was built between 1932 and 1941 and is named after the long time commissioner of Toronto's public works Rowland Caldwell Harris. The building, unlike most modern engineering structures, was also created to make an architectural statement. Fashioned in the Art Deco style, the cathedral-like structure remains one of Toronto's most admired buildings. It is, however, little known to outsiders. The interiors are just as opulent with marble entryways and vast halls filled with pools of water and filtration equipment. The plant has thus earned the nickname The Palace of Purification.

*Four Nations Corner: *The King and Simcoe Streets intersection was a busy place in the latter part of the 19th century. *Government House*, the official residence of the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, was located in the block now occupied by Roy Thomson Hall and Metro Hall and the Parliament Buildings were in the block to the south. Upper Canada College stood on the north west corner. A popular tavern was on the north-east corner. St. Andrews Church opened in 1876, is still on the fourth corner. The four corners were known as "The Four Nations: Legislation, Education, Damnation and Salvation.

Teiaiagon was a Seneca village on the east bank of the Humber River in Toronto. The name means 'It crosses the stream'. The site is currently near the intersection of Jane and Bloot Streets. Built, 1676, some 50 years after the arrival of Etienne Brule, it was a trading post and meeting place between the First Nations and European traders.
The village was inhabited by 4000-5000 people and comprised of 50 long houses.

Spadina House is one of Toronto's finest old manors. The first house constructed on the site was built in 1818 by Dr. William Warren Baldwin. He named his 200-acre property and estate Spadina, which derived from the native word espadinong, which translates as "hill" or "sudden rise of land".

In 1890, the Officers of the Toronto Garrison founded the Royal Canadian Military Institute with the then Governor General of Canada, The Earl Grey, as its patron. Earl Grey laid the cornerstone of the existing premises in 1907.

Today, the heritage building– an Edwardian edifice flanked distinctively by two 19th century cannons, with substantial space devoted to Museum galleries displaying exhibits drawn from the Institute's extensive collections, and a 30,000 volume research Library whose holdings include significant collections of primary documents relating to Canada's military history – some of which are unique, alongside a curatorial workshop and small research areas for visiting scholars.

This shot I took on our way back, stopping to have a bite to eat by the Sand River. That's a beer-related injury young Ricardo is sporting there. My fault of course, for not packing the bottle opener. Oh, and him using a Swiss Army knife blade to open the beer. Ouch.

Walking behind this particular platoon made me feel a bit sad, remembering so many young men who died in the trenches in WW1.. all wars are horrible, but something about the way this one was fought makes me a little sick.

I'm sitting here right now with a smile on my face because somewhere out in the lush green hills of Halton, there's a grizzled, road-weary police horse enjoying his first day in his new country home.

After almost 20 years of service to the city of Toronto, police mount General retired today. No fanfare, no party, no sloppy goodbyes, just the almost-ceremony of removing his heavy, studded street shoes and then walking out the doors of the stable for the very last time, into a waiting trailer.

He spent the night before last on Yonge Street, his last patrol, Caribana, the baking hot pavement, the crowds, the cars, after all his years on the street he was practically oblivious to all of them.

I'm sure he has a lot of stories, about the demonstrations, the 3am entertainment district forays, the freezing cold and the broiling heat, all of the horses bear it so stoically. General had pretty much seen it all. The last time I had to shoot
him for the trading cards, I noticed that he wasn't quite as centered as he usually was, he kept lifting his nose to the wind and looking off into some distance that only he could see. He was fidgety and a little cranky. I remember thinking that if
I'd been walking these streets for that long, I'd feel the same way. I started to wish for him to retire.

Well, today I got my wish. Thanks to the hard work of all the training officers at the unit, there are enough new horses to take over the shifts.

One of his old partners who lives on a farm and has been waiting years for him to retire, offered to take him and the deal was done. I went down to the stables to photograph his special day. At the last minute we decided we'd follow him all the way to his new home in the country. I'm glad we did, it was a really emotional moment for all of us who witnessed it. Backing him out of the trailer, meeting his old friend, getting let out into his pasture, who knows if he took it all in?

I'm sure it'll be a while before he adjusts to his life of leisure and his new pasture-mates, but once he does I'm going to go back out and visit him again. And try not to cry this time so I can actually get a good shot of him.
