WHY THE 83 YR OLD GRANDMOTHER WADDED THE HUMBER RIVER!
MY MOTHER TRAVELLED IN A GREYHOUND BUS FROM VANCOUVER TO SEE THIS AWESOME TREE!"THE TURTLE SPIRIT TREE" WHEN SHE CAME HERE IT WAS EARLY SPRING THE HUMBER RIVER WAS VERY HIGH.BECAUSE OF HER SPIRIT OF ADVENTURE WE CROSSED THE HUMBER,WE KEPT OUR SHOES ON,TO AVOID SHARP ROCKS,AND SLIPPING DOWN THE RIVER.WE HELD EACH OTHER HAND IN HAND,AS WE NEGOTIATED THE COLD & RAPID WATERS.AS WE APROACHED THE TREE,MY MOTHER PULLED OUT FROM HER MEDICINE BAG SOME SAGE,TOBACCO,& SACRED EAGLE FEATHERS,YOU COULD SEE HER FACE LIGHT UP WITH SHEAR DELIGHT AS WE ENJOYED THE MAGIC OF BOYD PARK & "THE TURTLE SPIRIT TREE". I'M BLESSED TO HAVE SUCH A WONDERFUL MOM WHO TAUGHT ME TO LOVE & RESPECT HUMANS,ANIMALS & NATURE.MY MOTHER'S MAIDEN NAME WAS "MISKENACK" WHICH MEANS TURTLE IN OUR NATIVE LANGUAGE "CREE.
I TOLD HER,I SPOKE WITH THIS GREAT AUTHOR,PIERRE BERTON.WE SPOKE OF THE LATE CHIEF DAN GEORGE,AND HIS VISIT WITH MY GRANDMA,HE SAID HE KNEW HIM WELL,IT WAS A GREAT DAY!I WAS SO HAPPY TO BE PART OF THE NATIVE CEREMONY,WITH DAVID GREYEAGLE & THE FRIEND'S OF BOYD PARK.I HAVE PLENTY OF PICTURES FOR LASTING MEMORIES,I WILL MISS PIERRE & THE CHIEF,THEY HAVE INFUENCED MY LIFE TREMENDOUSLY
